Help Build Their Independence One Step at a Time

For families who have loved ones with intellectual disabilities, building independence is a shared goal. At home, families can find several ways to help nurture their loved one’s independence one step at a time.

  • Encourage Self-Care Skills

One of the first steps is to encourage self-care skills. Start with small tasks like dressing themselves or brushing their teeth. When in respite care, caregivers can also step in to encourage such activities. Celebrate their wins, no matter how small, to boost their confidence.

  • Create a Structured Routine

A structured routine can give them a sense of stability and predictability. Having a schedule for their meals, chores, recreational activities, or day habilitation services helps them feel more in control of their day.

  • Foster Communication

Open communication is a must. Encourage them to express themselves, whether through speech, gestures, or assistive devices. Effective communication, taught in outpatient programs in Texas, can greatly enhance their independence.

  • Collaborate on Household Tasks

Include them in simple household tasks. Let them help with tasks appropriate for them, like setting the table, folding laundry, or watering plants. Teaching them daily life skills not only promotes independence but gives them a sense of belonging.

  • Explore Leisure Activities

Engage in leisure activities together. Whether going for walks, playing games, or enjoying hobbies, shared experiences can boost self-esteem and create lasting memories. Our non-profit organization in Houston, Texas, can also facilitate these activities.

At Stepping Stones Achievement Center, Inc., we truly understand the importance of building independence within the family unit. Our organization offers programs and services, all designed to complement the daily family life of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
